The C.F. Sauer Company

Duke’s Mayonnaise, the leading mayonnaise in the Southeast, got its start in 1917 with Mrs. Eugenia Duke of Greenville, S.C., who began preparing and selling sandwiches to soldiers stationed at nearby Fort Sevier. Her great business success was credited to the homemade mayonnaise she used. When returning World War I soldiers began writing to request her mayonnaise recipe, Eugenia gave up sandwich making to focus on the spread. The C.F. Sauer Company purchased Duke’s in 1929 and Eugenia came on board as the official spokesperson. Duke’s has been a family favorite using the original recipe ever since.
