{"id":2755,"date":"2018-02-28T18:45:23","date_gmt":"2018-02-28T18:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/?p=2755"},"modified":"2018-03-22T14:49:14","modified_gmt":"2018-03-22T14:49:14","slug":"whats-new-passover-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/whats-new-passover-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s New for Passover 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>OU-P 2018<\/h2>\n<p>The OU continues to give certification to <strong>Passover Quinoa.<\/strong> Quinoa will be available with an OUP from <em>Goldbaum, Pereg, and La Bonne<\/em>. Pereg will also be selling quinoa flour.<\/p>\n<p>The OU will also continue certifying <strong>OU Kitniyot retail items<\/strong> as it did last year. <em>Flaum\u2019s<\/em> will be selling <em>Sonny &amp; Joe\u2019s<\/em> OU Kitniyot hummus and tahini.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ferrero in Italy <\/em>will have <strong>OU Kitniyot Nutella Spread<\/strong><br \/>\nand <strong>Kinder Chocolate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Osem<\/em> will also have a number of <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/kitniyot-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OU Kitniyot items<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong><em>Telma corn flakes<\/em> will also be available marked OU Kitniyot. All these products are clearly marked OU Kiyniyot Ochlei Kitniyot and are all made with Mashgiach Temidi like all OU-P products.<\/p>\n<p><em>Manischewitz together with Welch\u2019s<\/em> will again have <strong>concord grape juice<\/strong> and <strong>sparkling concord<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>grape juice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kedem continues to bottle grape juice under its own name as well as under the Savion and Gefen labels. <em>All these items have always been and will continue to be Mevushal.<\/em><br \/>\nKedem has one not Mevushal grape juice. This is bottled in 1.5 liter glass bottles and clearly<br \/>\nlabeled Non-Mevushal. Kedem also has Fresh Pressed Grape Juice as an OU-P grape juice made without sulfites. Kedem also has Pomegranate and Sparkling Pomogrape Juices with the OU-P certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passover vodka<\/strong> will be available from <em>David\u2019s Harp<\/em> and <em>Royal Elite.<br \/>\n<\/em>There will also be <em>Lvov<\/em> and <em>Pravda<\/em> OU-P vodka imported from Poland.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/the-spirit-of-the-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>OU-P liquers<\/strong><\/a> will be available under the Queen<em> Esther, Spirit of Solomon &amp; Gold Shot labels.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Zachlawi<\/em> will have OU-P arak and vodka.<\/p>\n<p><em>Manischewitz<\/em> continues to bake <strong>matzah<\/strong> under OU Passover supervision.<br \/>\nThe OU has also agreed as in past years to place the OU-P on <em>Aviv, Osem, Yehuda, Rishon and Holy Land<\/em> matzah products coming from Israel. The items are supervised by local Rabbanim and are satisfactorily made with OU Pesach guidelines. In addition, we certify Yanovsky matzah baked in Argentina. This matzah is widely distributed in Latin America. This company manufactures various types of matzah.<br \/>\nManischewitz has whole wheat matzah meal and whole wheat matzah farfel. These items are<br \/>\nmade from Manischewitz OU-P whole wheat matzah. They also make OU-P spelt matzah.<br \/>\nManischewitz also bakes OU-P Matzah under the Horowitz Margareten label. They also make<br \/>\nMediterranean Matzah which is regular matzah sprayed with oil and spices after baking. It is not<br \/>\nMatzah Ashirah. Manischewitz continues to produce Egg Matzah as well as Passover Egg Tam<br \/>\nTams. These are made from egg matzah dough and marked as Matzah Ashira on the box.<br \/>\nManischewitz also bakes machine Shmura Matzah. In addition, Manischewitz makes a product<br \/>\nknown as matzah crackers. This is an ordinary matzah product and is not Matzah Ashira. The<br \/>\nvarious Israeli OU matzah companies will all be selling machine shmurah matzah as well. The<br \/>\nOU also supervises hand shmurah matzah under the Holy Land and Rokeach labels. In addition<br \/>\nthis year Kestenbaum hand oat shmurah matzah will be available with OU-P.<br \/>\nManischewitz will again have gluten free OU-P crackers and gluten free OU-P matzah style<br \/>\nsquares.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yehuda<\/em> will also have these <strong>gluten free products<\/strong> as well as gluten free cake meal, fine<br \/>\nmeal, and farfel. <em>Kedem will also have Absolutely brand<\/em> OU-P gluten free flatbread and crackers<br \/>\nas well as <em>Jeff Nathan<\/em> gluten free Panko Flakes. In addition, Manischewitz will have Jason gluten free<br \/>\ncoating crumbs and panko coating crumbs. None of these products are made from matzah<br \/>\nand none of them can be used in the place of matzah. This is clearly marked on the label.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coca Cola<\/em> will again be available with an OU-P for Pesach in <strong>Regular and Diet flavors.<\/strong> Aside<br \/>\nfrom the New York metropolitan area, Coke will be available in Boston, Baltimore-Washington,<br \/>\nMiami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. Coca-Cola items will be made with an OU-P in 2 liter bottles.<br \/>\nAll these items, of course, require the P symbol. All the Passover Coke items will be marked<br \/>\nwith a distinctive yellow cap in addition to the P symbol on the cap or shoulder of the bottle.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Haddar line of Passover products will again be available.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Barton brand<\/em> will be back again with the OU-P. A full line of <em>Barricini<\/em> candy items will be available with the OU-P symbol. Manischewitz and Barricini will both have chocolate covered egg matzah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manischewitz is introducing two items, Matzah Pizza and Matzah Smores.<\/strong> These are regular Passover matzah in a box containing additional ingredients to add to the matzah to make this into either a pizza-type product or a candy item. In addition, Barton will have OU-P chocolate covered regular<br \/>\nmatzah crackers. The Barton item is not Matzah Ashirah. Barricini also has chocolate covered<br \/>\nregular matzah. This is also not Matzah Ashirah.<\/p>\n<p><em>Norman\u2019s <\/em>has a full line of <strong>Cholov Yisroel yogurt.<\/strong> In addition, there will be OU-P Cholov<br \/>\nYisroel goat cheese and sheep cheese from <em>Barkanit<\/em> and mozzarella, provolone and pecorino<br \/>\ncheese from <em>Yotvata<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>J&amp;J<\/em> will have OU-P cottage cheese, cream cheese, and farmer cheese. All of these will be <strong>Cholov<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Yisroel.<\/strong> <em>Dannon<\/em> will again be producing OU-P yogurt in coffee and vanilla flavors.<\/p>\n<p>There will be two <strong>OU-P brands of packaged cakes<\/strong> available this year. These are <em>Schicks and<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Lily\u2019s Bakeshop<\/em>. They are baked in a special Passover bakery and do not contain matzah meal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Irene\u2019s<\/em> will have OU-P <strong>certified blintzes<\/strong>. These items are made with matzo meal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bernies Foods<\/em> will have <strong>Frankels blintzes, waffles and pizza as well as LeTova Kichel and <\/strong>breadsticks<strong>.<\/strong> These are not made with matzah meal. Dayenu pizza, rolls, and pierogies are made with matzah meal. Manischewitz and Yehuda will have a line of matza meal based cakes and cookies.<\/p>\n<p>This year <em>Manischewitz<\/em> has introduced two versions of <strong>frozen gefilte fish<\/strong>. These are Premium<br \/>\nGold Fish Log and Premium Gold Pre Sliced Frozen Gefilte Fish. <em>Season<\/em> will have <strong>Moroccan<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>sardine items<\/strong> in various sauces for Passover. All of these items are made with mashgiach temidi<br \/>\nand bishul yisrael. <strong>Tuna fish<\/strong> is available with an OU-P from <strong>Season, Gefen and Mishpacha.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Season and Gefen<\/em> will have OU-P <strong>salmon<\/strong> in both regular and no salt versions. <em>Kedem<\/em> will have<br \/>\nSea Castle <strong>sardines<\/strong> in tomato sauce, olive oil and water. King Oscar sardines in olive oil will<br \/>\nalso be available. <strong>Kedem is introducing Sea Castle roasted seaweed and roasted spicy seaweed <\/strong><strong>snacks.<\/strong><br \/>\nAll these items are made with mashgiach temidi and Bishul Yisrael.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The OU position remains that <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/extra-virgin-olive-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OU supervised extra virgin olive oil can be used without special <\/a><\/strong><strong>supervision for Pesach.<\/strong> <em>Zayit<\/em> will have OU-P certified olive oil. <em>Mother\u2019s olive oil pan coating spray, Mishpacha olive oil spray and Manischewitz olive oil spray<\/em> will also be available with the OU-P symbol. <strong>Prepared olives<\/strong> with an OU-P will be available from <em>Gefen, Osem, Kvuzat<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yavne, Gilboa <\/em>and<em> Mishpacha.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>The OU position is that all <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/coconut-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virgin coconut oil is acceptable<\/a> for <\/strong><strong>Passover.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The OU position continues to be that all granulated white sugar is acceptable for Passover.<\/strong> This is not true for powdered sugar which requires Passover certification. <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/food-items\/sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brown sugar may be a problem<\/a>, but there is a list of various OU year-round certified brands of brown sugar in the<br \/>\ndirectory which are acceptable for Passover. <em>Gefen will again have Nutra Taste Gold,<\/em> a new<br \/>\n<strong>artificial sweetener.<\/strong> It will also continue to offer <em>Sweet &amp; Low<\/em> with OU Passover certification.<br \/>\n<em>Health Garden<\/em> will again have OU-P <strong>Xylitol sweetener<\/strong> and Xylitol Vanilla sweetener.<br \/>\n<em>Manischewitz<\/em> also will be selling OU-P cotton candy. This year <em>Fox\u2019s U-Bet syrups<\/em> will be<br \/>\navailable with OU-P certification. These syrups are all pareve.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The OU position remains that regular tea bags, which are not flavored or decaffeinated, are <\/strong><strong>acceptable for Pesach without special supervision.<\/strong> In addition, we have clarified once again this year that <em>all Lipton unflavored decaffeinated tea bags are acceptable without special supervision.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>This is not true of other decaffeinated tea bags.<\/em> <em>Shoprite<\/em> also has specially marked OU-P plain<br \/>\ntea bags on the market. In addition, Swee-Touch-Nee and Wissotsky will continue to have<br \/>\nPassover herbal teas.<\/p>\n<p>Some coffee companies add maltodextrin, which is either <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/which-foods-are-chametz-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chametz<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/what-is-kitniyot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kitniyos<\/a>, to instant coffee. As a result, this coffee is not kosher for Passover. Only coffee bearing an OU-P symbol or brands listed in the gray area of the Passover Directory should be used. Both Folger\u2019s and Taster\u2019s Choice instant coffee remain acceptable without special Passover certification.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This year we have clarified again that Folger\u2019s Decaffeinated instant coffee is also acceptable for Passover without special certification.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>This is not true of other OU certified decaffeinated instant coffee.<\/em> Other brands should be<br \/>\nchecked in the Directory. Ground coffee remains acceptable from any source as long as it<br \/>\nis unflavored and not decaffeinated.
