{"id":1233,"date":"2014-03-11T19:29:55","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T19:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2017-12-28T19:50:24","modified_gmt":"2017-12-28T19:50:24","slug":"brief-guide-seder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/brief-guide-seder\/","title":{"rendered":"Brief Guide to the Seder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are two Torah obligations and five rabbinical obligations performed during the <i>seder<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>TORAH MITZVOT:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Relating the story of the exodus (<i>Maggid <\/i>\u2013 reading from the <i>Haggadah<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Eating matzot<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>RABBINICAL MITZVOT:<\/b><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Drinking four cups of wine (<i>arbah kosot<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Eating bitter herbs (<i>maror<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Reciting Psalms of praise (<i>Hallel<\/i>)<\/li>\n<li>Eating the <i>afikoman <\/i>(an extra piece of matza for dessert as a reminder of the Passover offering)<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrating acts of freedom (such as sitting with a pillow cushion, and leaning to the left as we eat matza and drink wine)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>SEDER PLATE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>A special <i>seder <\/i>plate is arranged with symbolic foods to follow the order of the <i>Haggadah<\/i>. The prepared plate should be placed before the head of the household, or the one conducting the <i>seder<\/i>, who dispenses the various foods to each participant. The <i>seder <\/i>plate contains:<\/p>\n<p>Three whole matzot: either on the plate or next to it;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><i>Charoset<\/i>: mixture of apples, nuts, wine and cinnamon, symbolizing the bricks and mortar of ancient Egypt;<\/li>\n<li><i>Karpas<\/i>: a vegetable (preferably parsley, potato or celery);<\/li>\n<li><i>Maror<\/i>: bitter herbs (may consist of romaine lettuce, endives or pure horseradish);<\/li>\n<li><i>Beitzah<\/i>: a roasted or boiled egg;<\/li>\n<li><i>Zeroa<\/i>: a piece of roasted or boiled meat or poultry;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Also: a bowl of salt water should be placed near the <i>seder <\/i>plate.<\/p>\n<h3><b>MATZA<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>We are commanded to eat matza three times during the <i>seder<\/i>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>At the beginning of the <i>seder <\/i>(with a special blessing);<\/li>\n<li>For <i>Korech <\/i>(Hillel sandwich) together with the <i>maror<\/i>;<\/li>\n<li>For the <i>afikoman <\/i>(at the end of the meal)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For details on the specific amounts and requirements, see below.<\/p>\n<h3><b>FOUR CUPS OF WINE<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Red wine is preferred for use during the <i>seder<\/i>. Each Jew is obligated to drink four cups of wine at these specific times during each <i>seder<\/i>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start of the <i>seder<\/i>, following <i>Kiddush<\/i>;<\/li>\n<li>Before the meal (after reciting the <i>Haggadah <\/i>story);<\/li>\n<li>Following the <i>Birkat Hamazon <\/i>(Grace After the Meal);<\/li>\n<li>Following completion of <i>Hallel<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For details on the specific amounts and requirements, see below.<\/p>\n<h3><b>BITTER HERBS (<i>MAROR<\/i>)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Everyone is obligated to eat bitter herbs twice at each <i>seder<\/i>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Dipped in <i>charoset<\/i>;<\/li>\n<li>Immediately thereafter, a second, smaller volume of <i>maror <\/i>is eaten with matza in <i>Korech <\/i>(the Hillel sandwich).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Cooked or preserved vegetables are not suitable for <i>maror<\/i>; therefore commercially prepared grated horseradish, which is packed in vinegar, may not be used for the mitzva.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Bug Checked, Bubbe Approved\" href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/guidelines\/bug-checked-bubbe-approved\/\">For directions to properly clean and prepare romaine lettuce for use as <i>maror<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><b>RELATING THE STORY OF THE EXODUS AND HALLEL<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Young children are encouraged to participate in the <i>seder <\/i>to the extent of their ability. It is customary for the youngest person at the <i>seder <\/i>to ask the Four Questions.<\/p>\n<p>The formal part of the <i>seder <\/i>closes with <i>Hallel<\/i>, which praises God and His special relationship with the people of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>seder <\/i>traditionally concludes with the singing of several lively songs celebrating the relationship between God and the Jewish people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are two Torah obligations and five rabbinical obligations performed during the seder.
