{"id":3387,"date":"2019-03-10T07:45:35","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T07:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/?page_id=3387"},"modified":"2026-03-25T23:45:38","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T23:45:38","slug":"non-food-items","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/non-food-items\/","title":{"rendered":"Non Food Items"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section\">\n<ul class=\"list-unstyled\">\n<li><a href=\"#non-food-items\">Non-Edibles That Don&#8217;t Require Certification<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#parchment-paper\">Parchment Paper<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#pet-food\">Pet Food<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#toothpaste\">Toothpaste, Mouthwash and Lipsticks<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<header id=\"non-food-items\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2>Non-Edibles That Don\u2019t Require Certification<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-tags\">The consensus of the OU\u2019s poskim (rabbinic authorities) is that the following may be used on Passover without certification:<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<ul style=\"column-count: 2;\">\n<li><strong>Aluminum foil<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Aluminum foil baking pans<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Baby ointments<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bags (paper or plastic)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Body wash<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bowl and tub cleaners<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Candles<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cardboard<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Carpet cleaners<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Charcoal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cheese Cloths<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Conditioners<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Copper and metal cleaners\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cork<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cosmetics (except possibly lipsticks, see below)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cupcake holders<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cups (paper, plastic or styrofoam)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Deodorants<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Detergents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dishwashing Detergents *<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Drain openers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fabric protectors<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Furniture polish<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Glass cleaners<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hair gels, sprays and mousse\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hair removers and<\/strong><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><strong>treatments<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hand sanitizer<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Insecticides\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Isopropyl alcohol<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jewelry polish<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Laundry detergents<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lotions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Napkins (paper)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Oven cleaners\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Paper towels<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Perfumes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plastic containers<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plates (paper, plastic or styrofoam)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Scouring pads and powders<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shampoos<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shaving cream and gel<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shaving lotion\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Silver polish\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Skin cream<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Soaps<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Suntan lotion<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Talcum powder\u00a0(100% talc)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Toilet bowl cleaner<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Water filters<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>* Some Poskim maintain that it has been the established Minhag Yisrael (Jewish custom) to use kosher detergents on plates, pots and utensils as they come in contact with food.\u00a0 That said, if one used non-certified dishwashing detergent, Bidieved (after the fact), the kosher status of the utensils would not be compromised even for Passover.<\/p>\n<header id=\"toothpaste\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2><strong>Oral Hygiene (Toothpaste, Mouthwash) &amp; Flavored Lip Treatment (Lipstick, Lip Balm) Products<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Rabbinical authorities disagree as to whether kosher certification of these items is required (both for Passover and year-round). Consult your Rabbi.<\/p>\n<header id=\"parchment-paper\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2>Parchment Paper<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<p>Parchment paper requires Passover certification unless the brand appears in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/download-passover-guide-signup\/\">Passover Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<header id=\"pet-food\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2>Pet Food<\/h2>\n<p>Since it is forbidden to own or benefit from chametz during Passover, food that contains chametz may not be fed to pets. However, it is permitted to give pets food that contains <a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/what-is-kitniyot\/\">kitniyot<\/a>.<br \/>\nIf one is unable to procure pet food that does not contain chametz, some rabbinical authorities allow for a sale, which would transfer to a gentile the ownership and responsibility of caring for the pet.
