{"id":3380,"date":"2019-03-10T07:41:18","date_gmt":"2019-03-10T07:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/?page_id=3380"},"modified":"2026-03-24T16:03:55","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T16:03:55","slug":"baby-products","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/baby-products\/","title":{"rendered":"Baby Products"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"section\">\n<ul class=\"list-unstyled\">\n<li><a href=\"#babyfood\">Baby Food<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#baby-formula\">Baby\/Infant Formula List<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#baby-rice-cereals\">Baby Rice Cereals<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#prepared-baby-food\">Prepared Baby Food<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<header class=\"article-header\">\n<header id=\"babyfood\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2>Baby Food<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-tags\">The custom of disallowing the use of \u2018<i>Kitniyot\u2019\u00a0<\/i>(soy or corn, for example) was never applied to both infants or the ill who require\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/what-is-kitniyot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>kitniyot<\/i><\/a>\u00a0food.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<p>Despite the fact that\u00a0<i>Kitniyot\u00a0<\/i>for infants is permissible, the Mishna Brura states that it is preferable (but not mandatory) to avoid giving infants rice, buckwheat (kasha in Yiddish), or millet on Passover.<\/p>\n<p>However, one must take care to keep\u00a0<em>kitniyot<\/em>\u00a0baby utensils or cutlery away from the general kitchen area. Any mixing or washing should be done elsewhere, such as in the bathroom sink.<\/p>\n<p>We have indicated that\u00a0<i>Kitniyot\u00a0<\/i>is permitted for infants \u2013 but that does NOT cover\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/which-foods-are-chametz-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Chametz<\/i><\/a>, or any food that was processed on equipment that was not properly cleaned for Passover. Such\u00a0<i>Chametz\u00a0<\/i>is strictly prohibited even for infants.<\/p>\n<p>When we talk about\u00a0<i>Kitniyot\u00a0<\/i>being permitted for infants, it means that it would have to be a homemade\u00a0<i>Kitniyot<\/i>, unless the Sephardic community has a reliable Hechsher on an infant product.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Halacha\u00a0<\/i>(Jewish law) also suggests that separate pots, dishes and cutlery be dedicated to the\u00a0<i>Kitniyot\u00a0<\/i>food.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, in cases where a doctor insists that the infant must have\u00a0<i>Chametz<\/i>, the prohibition does not apply. In such a situation, it would be preferable (if possible) that a gentile should bring his own\u00a0<i>Chametz\u00a0<\/i>and feed the baby. If that is not feasible then a Jew would be permitted to feed the infant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/which-foods-are-chametz-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Chametz<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The upper age still considered an \u2018infant\u2019 depends on the child. Obviously, if the child can eat healthy food that is not<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/what-is-kitniyot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kitniyot<\/a><\/em>, that would be preferable. Usually, the Poskim indicate that two years of age would be the upper limit, but if a 2-year old is not ready to eat other food, then certainly the limit goes up as high as his or her Bar or Bat Mitzvah.<\/p>\n<header id=\"baby-formula\" class=\"article-header\">\n<h2>Baby\/Infant Formula<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<p>The following baby formula\u00a0can be assumed to be free of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/which-foods-are-chametz-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">chametz<\/a>. Many are made from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/oukosher.org\/passover\/articles\/what-is-kitniyot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kitniyot<\/a>\u00a0ingredients. However, there is no problem owning rice and making your own cereal from brown rice or non-enriched white rice over Passover.<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<p>One should make the cereal using a special non-Pesach, non-<i>chametz\u00a0<\/i>pot, and this special pot (and any special utensils used for the cereal) should not be washed together with the Pesach dishes. You can\u00a0<i>Kasher\u00a0<\/i>a pot before Passover and dedicate it for making the rice cereal over Passover.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the grinding of the rice should not be done in a Passover grinder on Passover. You can grind the rice in a\u00a0<b><i>clean\u00a0<\/i><\/b>chametz grinder before Passover or purchase a dedicated grinder for use over Passover.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sample Recipe:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Rice Cereal<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/4 c. rice powder [brown or white (not enriched) rice ground in blender, food processor, or coffee grinder]<\/li>\n<li>1 cup water<\/li>\n<li>Bring liquid to boil in saucepan.
